Something new, from a different way of looking
Fevvers began with a simple question: could we capture what makes feathers so enticing without trying to recreate the feather itself?
That question has taken us somewhere much bigger. Into the structures and possibilities hidden in the natural world. Into the space between material innovation, design and fashion. And into collaborations with designers who are helping us discover what this new material category could become.
Fevvers is the product of different perspectives coming together – creative and commercial, experimental and practical, rebellious and rigorous.
Fevvers is a new material category inspired by the extraordinary characteristics of feathers: their movement, volume, delicacy, texture and drama and the possibility of expressing them in entirely new ways.
Rather than trying to recreate a feather, we look to the natural world for a different material language. We work with fibres, stems, seed heads and other structures found across the botanical world – each with their own forms, behaviours and beautiful irregularities. Selected, transformed and combined in different ways, they allow us to explore new expressions of movement, volume, texture and embellishment.
The result isn’t an imitation. Fevvers is developing into a growing family of materials, techniques and applications with an aesthetic and identity of its own. Designed for fashion, but with possibilities far beyond it.
Fevvers takes its name from Sophie Fevvers, the gloriously unruly aerialiste at the heart of Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus.
Loud, theatrical and defiantly Cockney, Fevvers refuses to fit neatly into anyone else’s idea of what she should be. Her magnificent wings blur the line between natural and constructed, real and invented – and she keeps everyone guessing.
That felt like our kind of name.
Carter herself wasn’t much interested in convention either. A pioneering writer who took familiar forms, pulled them apart and made them unmistakably her own.

Nicola has spent more than 15 years working at the intersection of embroidery, embellishment, materials and fashion.
As an embroidery designer, she has worked with some of the world’s leading fashion houses, including Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Erdem, Stella McCartney and Lanvin – developing an intimate understanding of how extraordinary materials move from an idea into the hands of design teams, makers and ultimately onto garments.
It was through this work that the idea behind Fevvers began to emerge. Nicola had repeatedly encountered the creative desire for the movement and spectacle of feathers alongside the growing need for alternatives. Existing solutions rarely delivered the same emotional or aesthetic impact.
At Fevvers, Nicola leads creative and material development, bringing together her knowledge of embroidery, construction, fashion and making to shape an entirely new material category.
James is a strategist and creative industries specialist and founder of the consultancy West Creative.
Through West Creative, James has advised more than 500 creative business owners and worked with organisations on strategy, proposition, collaboration and commercial development.
His work has consistently sat at the point where creative ambition meets practical reality – understanding what an idea needs to become viable, how to build the right partnerships around it and how to turn early potential into something people will value and buy.
At Fevvers, James leads strategy and commercial development – shaping the business model, brand relationships and partnerships needed to take a material innovation from an extraordinary idea towards a viable new category.
Fevvers exists in the space between a creative idea and a commercial reality – which is also where our different experiences meet.
Nicola understands materials from the inside out: how designers think, how makers work and what an innovation has to do when it reaches a garment. James approaches the same challenge from the outside in: how an idea finds its market, builds the right relationships and develops a viable route to growth.
That combination has shaped Fevvers from the beginning. We don’t believe material innovation happens in isolation from the people who will use it or that a beautiful prototype is enough.
Together, we’re building the material and the business around it. Working with designers, makers, botanists, manufacturers and brands to turn a provocative idea into an entirely new material category.
